The Hawthorn Historic Inn is a delightful and central place to live for a few months if you are here on assignment or looking for permanent lodging. In the evenings our guests enjoy unimpeded and beautiful sunsets from our multiple decks throughout the Inn.

Some basic facts about the building: it is a Dutch Colonial Victorian built at the turn of the 19th-century. It is on the National Historic Register and is a state historic Landmark.... has about 2000 ft. of decks on multiple levels.In addition to a brand new kitchenette in the unit, freshly painted and remodeled... offshore breezes and the warm afternoon sun all day long keep the temperature mild and comfortable. Our proximity to transit is very high. The First Avenue Bus can take you directly north to Hillcrest and directly south to the Embarcadero and the Waterfront.
By rail we have the Green line and the Blue Line and the California Coaster all within one mile. There is also a free bus which operates in Balboa Park.
We are three blocks to Balboa Park which has 17 museums, and also the world famous San Diego Zoo. Baalboa Park is over 1,200 acres and is the largest urban park in the United States.
With regard to location we a five minute drive from the airport, A 15 minute walk to the Convention Center and three blocks from Balboa Park which has 17 museums, countless gardens and several theatres including the nationally acclaimed Old Globe theatre, and the San Diego zoo. A bus goes right past the hotel and can take visitors either downtown or North about 1 mile where a beautiful sanctuary run by the self realization fellowship since the 1903 Chicago worlds fair can be found. A big plus for staying here is that most visitors will not need to rent a car.
The Hawthorne Inn also known in earlier years as the Plainsman looks the same as when it was built in the 1890s. Even the interior hallways have not been altered. There are a wide hallways, the rooms are very soundproof, there is a public Study area on the first floor...it is sunny, quiet and little used by other guests...it's like having a spare room to read in etc.
There is a full kitchen in the basement for guests to use.
On the first floor hallways we have collected antique maps and photographs depicting what the community looked like 100 years ago. Finally, we have heard reports and read online reports that the Hawthorne Historic Inn is haunted. Please note we are under the flight path so if you are a sensitive sleeper please consider this information before booking.
